Seafood and Meat are Gout Foods to Avoid

Richard Freeman asked:

Research conducted over a long period of time revealed diet containing high quantities of protein or those high in purines are gout foods to avoid. When there is an excess of uric acid, gout sets in. Many of the foods are known to contain purines and when there is an excess of them, uric acid level rises in the body. Kidneys also fail to let uric acid out. Gout attacks leading to pain begins to set in. It can be very painful and makes a normal healthy lifestyle difficult. You have to cut down on your purine intake.

Normally, beer and other types of alcoholic beverages contain high purine. Sea fishes like anchovies, sardines and herring are gout foods to avoid. Liver, kidneys and sweet breads are a big NO for gout. Peas, cauliflower, spinach, asparagus, mushrooms, dried beans and meat extracts are best kept out of everyday diet if one has gout. Although these foods contain high purine, studies have revealed they do not pose a very high risk for gout patients.

Diets high in protein are also among the gout foods to avoid. There was a very interesting study done by Dr.Hyon K Choi in 2004 which was reported in the medicine journal of New England. Based on a study of nearly 47,150 men who never had any gout related problems for the last 12 years, it was found that likelihood of gout was 40% more among those who took high quantities of meat in their daily diet. It was 50% for those who took high quantities of seafood with their diet.

The team also found that high purine and protein were both gout foods to avoid. The team also found that low fat dairy products brought down the risk of gout considerably. They also found a similarity between gout and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Gout foods to avoid were also known to cause cardio related diseases. Purines and high quantity of proteins cause the level of uric acid to rise and turn into crystals in the joints that cause pain. You may be wondering what’s wrong with seafood.

For long doctors had been recommending large helpings of seafood for those with heart related problems. What’s gone wrong with the new study? But research conducted by the team in New England found a connection between seafood and gout. It is believed that the effect of seafood can vary among individuals. But very high purine was found in herrings, mussels, sardines, yeast, sweetbread and smelt. These are the major gout foods to avoid and not feel the excruciating pain when uric acid soars.
